Abstract

In the contemporary Middle East, we see a dangerous phenomenon that is, willingly or unwillingly, a serious threat to global democracy. This phenomenon is a form of legitimization of terrorist groups and their redefinition in the form of "political opponents", which is referred to as "political purge of terrorism". This research, with an analytical descriptive approach and the use of documentation and library methods, seeks to answer the question of whether in contemporary circumstances, a clear boundary can be drawn between political opponents and terrorist groups that have sometimes reached power? The findings show that major powers and regional actors offer variable definitions of terrorism and political opposition, depending on their interests. In the Syrian Tahrir al-Sham model, the rotation of US policies towards Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the leader of the group, is a clear example of the political purge of terrorism. The results of this study emphasize that it is necessary to prevent such a phenomenon at the level of the international system and the region. Provide a clear definition of concepts such as terrorism and political opposition, along with international executive guarantees. Support for legitimate political opponents and a peaceful approach should be strengthened.
