[English]

This study examines the emergence and transformation of the concept of “homeland” (*vatan*) in the collective self-consciousness of Iranians and its role in the formation of national consciousness and the development of the nation-state in Iran. The central question is how the idea of homeland emerged in the historical experience of Iranian society and which cultural, historical, and political factors contributed to its formation within the collective self-consciousness of Iranians. Contrary to approaches that explain the formation of the modern nation-state in Asia mainly through political reforms, administrative centralization, or institutional development, this article argues that the establishment of the nation-state in Iran was preceded by the gradual formation of a shared awareness of homeland as a historical and cultural territory. Accordingly, the main objective of the study is to explain the historical process through which this awareness developed and to identify the major factors that strengthened the concept of homeland in Iranian society.

The research adopts a historical-analytical method and relies on historical sources as well as the analysis of major political, social, and cultural developments in Iran. In order to trace the formation of the concept of homeland in Iran and in relation to other regions of Asia, the study examines key historical transformations from the Safavid period to the Qajar era, the Constitutional Revolution, and the Pahlavi period. The findings show that a combination of cultural, social, and political developments gradually strengthened the sense of belonging to a common territory and paved the way for the emergence of national consciousness among Iranians.

The results indicate that, as in other Asian contexts, the concept of homeland in Iran was not the product of a single factor; rather, it emerged through the interaction of diverse historical and cultural elements. Shared historical memory, the Persian language and its literary tradition, mythological narratives and identity-forming symbols, long-standing cultural traditions, and collective historical experiences were among the most important of these elements. Among them, the Persian language served as the principal carrier of Iran’s historical and cultural memory. Over the centuries, through literature, historiography, and cultural narratives, it preserved the continuity of Iranian identity and sustained a shared image of Iran. In addition, the expansion of modern education, the establishment of new educational institutions, the growth of print culture, and the spread of newspapers and public communication in the modern period played an important role in deepening national awareness and strengthening the concept of homeland.

At the same time, political crises and external threats also contributed to the reinforcement of collective solidarity and national consciousness. Events such as the Azerbaijan crisis after the Second World War, the movement for the nationalization of the oil industry, and the 1979 Revolution each contributed, in different ways, to redefining and strengthening the meaning of homeland and national identity. These experiences show that, at critical historical moments, homeland became one of the most important focal points of collective unity and social mobilization in Iranian society.

In conclusion, the study argues that, unlike in some Asian countries where the concept of homeland was partly imported or prescribed from above, the concept of homeland in Iran was the outcome of a long historical process in which linguistic, cultural, historical, and political factors interacted with one another. Therefore, the formation of the modern nation-state in Iran cannot be fully understood without considering these deeper cultural and civilizational foundations. In the Iranian historical experience, homeland is not merely a geographical territory; it is an identity-based and civilizational concept that gradually became embedded in the collective self-consciousness of Iranians and acquired meaning in connection with the broader traditions of Asian civilization.
